The most obvious difference is that LED walls are seamless, whereas LCD video walls have a grid-like appearance. LED Video wall prices are generally higher, but they tend to have a brighter display too.
Whether to use LED or LCD for your project will depend on several factors, including the application; for example, a signage video wall or a large boardroom display. With your video wall system, it is important to consider the minimum viewing distance for your audience, ambient lighting conditions, indoor or outdoor use and your budget.
See below to learn more about LED and LCD video walls, and when you’re ready, please get in touch to discuss your requirements, or take our quick video wall quiz to learn a little more about the typical considerations for a video wall project.

LED walls are created by combining smaller LED panels or tiles to create one seamless display, and you can build almost any screen size imaginable in this way.
An LED video wall displays picture or video content using ‘Light Emitting Diodes’, which are based on semiconductor compounds that convert power directly into light. The advantage of this technology is that it offers very high luminosity, which means LED video walls are bright enough to display clear video & pictures even in direct sunlight.
LED video walls can be specified for indoor or outdoor use and are the only serious choice for outdoor display screens as they are one of the only display technologies that can cope with direct sunlight.
LED video walls offer superior black levels, greatly improved contrast ratios and longer operating lives. The only potential drawback to an LED wall is the minimum viewing distance. Each LED represents one pixel in your overall level of image resolution. The distance between each LED is known as the ‘Pitch’, measured in millimetres.
A low ‘Pitch’ figure means that more individual LEDs are used to create the image, resulting in better image quality and a shorter minimum viewing distance.
LED Pitch levels can vary depending on the shape, size and content you need to work with, but the typical levels of ‘Pitch’ are 0.9mm, 1.5mm, 1.9mm, 2.4mm & 3.2mm. Lower pitch levels will offer the best image quality but also cost more.
As a general rule of thumb, if an LED wall has a pitch level of 3mm, you will need a minimum viewing distance of approx. 3 metres to see content clearly. The content may look blurry if your audience is closer to the screen than this.
On the other hand, maximum viewing distances are not a problem, and the further away the audience is from the screen, the better the image quality will appear. As such, higher pitch levels can also keep the price down in areas where the minimum viewing distance is not a concern.
We build video walls by combining individual LCD screens in a ‘daisy chain’ to form one large display area, and very large video wall configurations can be created this way. LCD walls offer high levels of resolution & excellent image quality. As such, they are suitable for areas where content has to be viewed at close range and so generally suit a wide range of indoor applications. We Supply LCD walls from leading manufacturers such as Sharp/NEC, LG and Samsung.
Brightness levels are also extremely important when considering LCD screens. The brightness of an LCD panel can generally be classed into three different categories;
“Image Seam” is a term used to refer to the total distance between adjacent screens. Top of the range “Ultra thin” panels have an image seam of 0.88mm when two screens are next too each other, which is very thin, but this also makes the screens slightly more fragile and also more expensive. The most popular LCD video wall panels have an image seam of 3.5mm which still offers an impressive display with a good balance between price and durability.
LCD video walls are created by combining individual LCD screens together to form one large display area and very large screens sizes can be created in this way. LCD video wall screens are available from several leading manufacturers such as NEC, Sharp & Samsung. Typical individual screen sizes are 46”, 55” & 60”.
There are now more LCD video wall screens available than ever before so please get in touch and we will help you to decide which one is best suited to your requirements.
LCD Video Walls are most commonly wall mounted but can also be suspended from ceilings or mounted on floor stands if necessary.
LCD Video wall screens are designed for use indoors. Although you can add a bespoke protection case around them, and then mount them outside, it is not usually economical and in that instance, we would recommend an LED video wall instead.
Once you have selected your preferred screen, you need to consider your video wall display. This will include items such as mounting brackets, cabling, video signal distribution hardware, video processors, content management systems, power distribution, equipment storage, custom surrounds and the actual installation itself. LCD/LED walls are usually wall-mounted but can also be hung from a ceiling or mounted on a floor stand if necessary.

Processors are sometimes needed to scale and size your picture & video content correctly so it appears normal when displayed on a large screen and not stretched or cropped. Simple video processors are built into LCD wall screens and will scale your content to appear as one large image. More complex ones that will enable several different types of video content to be shown on the screen simultaneously and handle odd screen shapes are often bespoke to each project and sold separately

Content Management Systems (CMS) will allow you to arrange & schedule your picture and video files quickly and efficiently to appear in the correct order on the screen. Using these systems, we can build both picture and video playlists that will allow you to schedule your marketing messages to suit your typical audience at certain times of the day. Playlists can be precisely controlled and scheduled days, weeks, or even months in advance and easily updated remotely via the internet when needed to keep your content looking fresh. We can also help with the configuration of video wall controllers to make this process as easy as possible.
Content is one of the most crucial parts of a LED/LCD wall project & as well as providing all the necessary hardware, we can help you to create new digital content & also offer a fully managed service whereby we will look after everything for you. Please get in touch to find out more.
Video wall installations generally take several days, depending on the size and location. Video walls require power and data connections and are heavy, often requiring structural support. Hence, video walls must be carefully planned to achieve the best outcome.
Yes, you can! Most video walls are seen in business environments, but if you have the space and budget, the latest seamless LED video wall technology can create impressive large-screen displays that rival your local cinema!
There are numerous different functions a video wall can have. A few popular reasons for having a video wall are for signage, entertainment, surveillance and advertising purposes.
This depends on which type you opt for. Typically, the lifespan of an LED video wall is at least 11 years (often longer), while an LCD video wall is around about 5 to 7 years.
Power consumption is another essential factor to consider before purchasing an LED or LCD video wall. LED video walls are more energy efficient than their LCD counterparts, and their lifespan is also almost double that of an LCD video wall, so they are by far the most energy-efficient type of video wall.
Image quality and display resolution are some of the most common questions asked. By their nature, LCD video walls will have a higher display resolution than LED video walls. However, they are very different display technologies, so the resolution of your video source content will be equally important. Depending on your requirements, HD, Full HD, 4K and 8K video wall displays are all possible with LCD and LED video walls.
The number of screens used in an LCD video wall depends on the overall size of the video wall you want to create and the space available to put it. The most common video walls are nine screens, arranged in a 3×3 format using 55″ screens, which comes in at approx. 3.6 x 2.0 Metres (WxH), but every project is different, and we have installed video walls in all different sizes.
Typical individual LCD video wall screen sizes are 46”, 55” & 60”.
The final configuration will depend on the unique situation, so please get in touch, and we will design a video wall to suit your requirements.
Yes, of course! When it comes to large outdoor displays, LED video walls are the best display technology to use because of their high brightness and durability. Outdoor LED video walls can be mounted onto the side of buildings, provided on freestanding steel support structures, or mounted onto vehicles for portable outdoor video wall displays.
